ecoYoga Mats: Question and Answers
What are these mats made of?
The ecoYoga mat is made of all natural ingredients: jute (a plant), and natural rubber. Rubber is tapped from trees, like maple syrup. Unlike other rubber mats on the market, the ecoYoga mat contains only non-toxic, naturally occuring minerals as softeners.
What are the environmental problems with most Yoga mats?
Most of the mats on the market today are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The manufacture of PVC creates dioxins, which have been found to cause cancer and reproductive disorders. When PVC burns, it releases toxins that can cause serious respiratory problems. PVC mats also contain toxic additives (most commonly lead, cadmium and pthalates) which can off-gas while you are on your mat. We recommend against allowing your child to use your PVC mat.
How durable are these mats?
These mats were invented one year ago, so we don't know yet how long they will last. Ashtanga Yoga practitioners in Europe have reported practicing on this mat regularly for six months, with little visible wear. At the same time, natural rubber is not as durable as PVC. If you are hard on mats, the ecoYoga mat may wear quickly for you.
Are these mats truly compostable?
Yes. A healthy, hot pile of compost will break down this mat .
Which side down?
Rubber down - to grip the floor. Jute up - to absorb sweat.
Which mat should I choose - 2mm or 4mm thick?
The thicker mats provide padding for practicing on a wood or bamboo floor. The 2mm mat will give a better result for standing poses practiced on carpet.
What about latex allergies?
Latex is another name for rubber. If you are allergic, this is not the best mat for you.
What if I don't want to purchase a new mat -- how can I avoid PVC?
Green Yoga recommends practicing standing postures on a bare floor, and doing seated postures on a blanket, rug, or towel.
Why purchase an ecoYoga mat?
Green Yoga believes that practicing non-violence towards the Earth is essential to Yoga.
